PEOPLE'S MOVEMENT FOR THE LIBERATION OF ANGOLA (MPLA) is the ruling party of the Republic of Angola, founded in 1956 by Antonio Neto and Viriato Clemente da Cruz. The current chairman of the party (since 2018) is João Lourenço, who has been President of Angola since 2017. The MPLA was created through the merger of the Angolan African Struggle Union and the Angolan Communist Party. The first president of the MPLA was one of the founders of the Communist Party, Mario Pinto de Andrade. In the 1961 War of Independence, the MPLA opposed Portugal. The party has been in power since Angola gained independence in 1975. The party's social base was the cultural strata of the urban population, mainly the Bantu people called Ambundu. At the first party congress, Marxism-Leninism was adopted as a party ideology, the name of the party increased, and it also became the Party of Labor. The ideological base of the center-left party is represented by social democracy and communism. The goals of the MPLA are to achieve effective government, in the formation of Angola as a democratic and modern state with a high level of scientific, technical and cultural development, in the development of the social sphere. The party seeks active and dynamic cooperation with the international community, the private sector and academia to implement effective and innovative ways of transferring technologies that ensure the stability and modernization of countries. Among the international partner parties of the MPLA, the party "United Russia" In 1962, the MPLA Youth Organization "Youth of the MPLA" was founded, which is one of the main mass organizations in the popular movement for the liberation of Angola - the Party of Labor (along with the women's organization and the union of workers). In the elections to the National Assembly in 2008, the MPLA won 191 seats (87% of the total number of seats). In 2012, the number of party seats in Parliament decreased to 175 seats (78% of the total number of seats). In the parliamentary elections in 2017, the party won 150 seats (68% of the total number of seats). During 6 electoral cycles, the MPLA won the majority of seats in Parliament and independently formed the government (in 1980, the political system of Angola was one-party).
