WORKERS' PARTY OF KOREA
WORKERS PARTY OF KOREA (WPK) - a party formed in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in 1945. The WPK has been the ruling political party of the DPRK since its inception. Until 1946 the party was called the Communist Party of Korea, in 1946 it merged with the New People's Party in the north of Korea and with the People's and New People's Parties in the south of Korea. As a result of the integration, the Workers' Party of North Korea and the Workers' Party of South Korea emerged, which in 1949 merged into a single Workers' Party of Korea. In 1946, Kim Il Sung founded the Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il Youth League, which is the youth wing of the party (Social Patriotic Youth League). At the Third Party Congress in 1956, an amendment was made to the Party Charter stating that Marxism-Leninism was the common ideological platform for all party members. At the 5th Party Congress, in 1970, the provision on Marxism-Leninism was removed from the Party Charter, and the teaching of Kim Il-Sung was recognized as the leading ideology. An important part of this ideology is the Juche idea. It consists in the reliance of the state on its own forces in internal affairs, providing for the solution of economic problems by attracting local raw materials and reserves, independence and sovereignty in foreign policy, independence in defense. The ultimate goal of the party is to build a communist society. From 1949 to 1994 the leader of the Workers' Party of Korea was Kim Il-Sung, and from 1997 to 2011 the general secretary of the WPK was his son, Kim Jong-Il. Subsequently, after his death, he was given the title of Eternal General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea as enshrined in the Charter. In this regard, the post of the First Secretary of the WPK was established for Kim Jong-Un in 2012 (since 2016, the post of the Chairman of the WPK); now the position is considered a key one in the party leadership. Along with this, since 2011, Kim Jong-Un has been the Supreme Leader of the DPRK. In the 2014 national elections to the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK, the party won 607 seats, accounting for 88% of the total. In 2019, the party won 100% of the seats. In 2018, WPK and the United Russia party signed a cooperation agreement. In 2020, the Workers' Party of Korea came out with a new course of strengthening the strategic forces and the forces of nuclear deterrence. The Workers' Party of Korea has more than 4,000,000 members. The party's headquarters are located in Pyongyang, the capital of the DPRK. Official website of the party: http://kcna.kp/
