ZIMBABWE AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION – PATRIOTIC FRONT

ZIMBABWE AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION – PATRIOTIC FRONT (ZANU-PF) - ruling political party in Zimbabwe. The party was formed on the basis of the coalition of the Zimbabwe African National Union and the Zimbabwe African People's Union in 1980 as part of the parliamentary election campaign. A formal agreement on the creation of a single party was adopted in 1989. During the presidential campaigns in 1996, 2002 and 2008 Robert Mugabe, nominated for the First Secretary post by the party, won all elections. Since 1980, the party has won an absolute majority in most parliamentary elections. In 2008, ZANU-PF, for the first time in history, lost sole control over parliament and brokered a deal with the Movement for Democratic Change - Tsvangirai, but later in 2013 the party won the elections again and gained a two-thirds majority. The last elections (2018) to the lower house of the federal parliament of Zimbabwe ended in victory for ZANU-PF, which received a constitutional majority. The party received 145 mandates - 69% of the seats in parliament. In the 2018 presidential elections in Zimbabwe, the party nominated Emmerson Mnangagwa as a candidate for state office. Mnangagwa won with 50.8% of the vote. The post of the First Party Secretary is currently held by the President of Zimbabwe - Emmerson Mnangagwa. The Chairman of the Party is Simon Khaya-Moyo. ZANU - PF Youth League is the party’s youth wing.
